The library is the academic ‘heart’ of any university. It is the
‘Life-blood’ of the university. It is one of the most essential academic
units in the university. Libraries form a vital part of the world’s
system of communication and education. Students, teachers, scholars,
scientists, business executives, and government officials use library
resources in their work. In the past, libraries were largely collections
of books. This was in consonance with the word ‘Library’ which comes
from the Latin word Libber, which means book. The picture of the library
today is different. The contemporary library collects, organizes and
disseminates information in various materials. These materials include
audiocassette tapes, videotapes, motion pictures (films), magazines,
journals, newspapers, pamphlets, computers, maps, pictures, etc. Advanced functions of Stella Maris Library includes, 1. Online book borrowing: Students can borrow books online and have it sent to their rooms by the librarian. Physical presence to the library is not a must. 2. Every book in the physical library is accurately shown online.
NOTE: The University Library is fully automated such that catalogue of books by discipline and by author will be fed into the computer to facilitate easy access by students and staff. The Library would be connected to the Internet to enable users access academic materials (books and journals) across the globe as well as send or receive e-mails.
The university will take full advantage of the services provided by the National Virtual Library to enrich the quality of scholarship. It will also establish linkages with other universities worldwide to benefit from the vast array of books and journals at their disposal.
The University Library provides binding and photocopying services. The Bindery will undertake the binding of journals and books for the Library as well as students projects, dissertations and other publications within and from outside the University community at specified charges. The photocopying services would also attract specified charges.
